Choosing ESAT modules: course requirements before revision
Oxbridge Admissions Tests · Updated
Do not choose ESAT modules solely because they are your strongest subjects. List the compulsory and optional modules for every target course first. All candidates take Mathematics 1, and most courses require two further modules.
Make one requirements row for each course
Two courses at the same university may have different requirements. Save the course link, entry year, compulsory modules and permitted choices before booking. An undated subject-selection table is not enough.
Where one course permits a free choice and another specifies a science module, your choices must also satisfy the compulsory requirement. Ask UAT-UK for advice before booking if compulsory requirements conflict.
- Record the university, exact course name and entry year.
- Separate compulsory modules from permitted choices.
- Compare UAT-UK guidance with the university course pages.
- Save the confirmed combination before building your revision calendar.
Use a diagnostic only where you have a choice
If the course permits a choice, compare candidate modules under consistent timed conditions. Record correct answers, unanswered questions and the three topics that consumed the most time. School grades provide context, not a substitute for the diagnostic.
Identify why marks were lost. Unlearned content needs revision; familiar content completed too slowly needs short timed sets and practice moving on. Avoid choosing a module on the strength of one unusually good result.
Plan across topics, not just favourite areas
Divide each module specification into topics and mark them secure, needing review or not yet learned. Physics practice should rotate between topics: repeated mechanics or electricity sets alone cannot establish readiness for the whole module.
Keep one mixed set each week, followed by two short topic sessions selected from the report. Retest with a different context that requires the same method, rather than relying on memory of the previous answer.
Check again before booking
UAT-UK warns that changing modules requires cancelling and rebooking. Resolve uncertainty before making the booking, not at the test centre. Check current official requirements and availability for your courses and location.
